The Canadian Chinese Autism Awareness Centre (CAAC) successfully held a\nseminar on Music Therapy in North York Center on March 23. The seminar invited\nMs. Karen Kwok, a professional music therapist, as the guest speaker. Karen is\na certified music therapist in Canada and the United States, holding a honour\u2019s\nbachelor degree in Psychology and Music from the University of Toronto and a Master\u2019s\ndegree in Music Therapy from Western Michigan University in the United States.\nMore than 20 participants comprising of children with autism and their parents\nattended the seminar, together with over 10 volunteers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Music is a basic medium for human communication and\nexpression. Therefore, it is the most natural choice of intervention for\nphysical, cognitive, emotional, and mental problems. Music therapy can help\nimprove quality of living and develop one\u2019s individual potential. In her\npresentation, Karen started with a brief history of music therapy, and\ncontinued to explain how music therapy can be applied to autism\nintervention,  social skill development,\nand design of group therapy sessions. After the presentation, Karen interacted\nwith the children and designed a group session in which the children were able\nto relax gradually and dance joyfully with the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seminar was well received by all the parents, some\nof which even spontaneously took the initiative to enroll in a group therapy\nsession organized by Karen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to mention that the seminar was\norganized entirely by volunteers, who contribute to every aspect of the\norganization. Some of volunteers participated with their whole families while others\ninvited their friends to form teams. Volunteers travelled from as far as\nOakville and Ottawa to contribute to making this event a success. All of the\nvolunteers shared the same passion of building CCAC to be a strong support\nnetwork and community for all the Chinese families with autism, and to strive\nfor their best interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
